The right choice of study

The new Management Foundation Course at HSZG helps prospective students find the right path to academic success.

Is this really the right degree programme for me? How does college work, anyway, and am I ready for it? What if I make a decision and later realize it’s not the right fit after all?

These and many other questions occupy the minds of prospective students year after year. For many, the transition from high school, vocational training, or a career to a university is a big step into the unknown. The decision isn’t always easy: Which university do I want to attend? Which major should I choose? And what exactly will I do with that degree professionally? Especially in the fields of management and business, the possibilities are vast: from Business Administration to tourism, from culture and communication to digitalization, and on to business informatics or Health Management. But which major is the right one?

Starting Your Degree with Greater Confidence

This is exactly where the new “Management” foundation course at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences comes in. The initiative was launched through the collaborative project “studienerfolg@saxHAW” —with a clear goal: to provide prospective students with a secure, structured, and at the same time flexible start to their academic studies.

Participants have the opportunity to explore various fields of study over the course of two semesters—ranging from traditional topics related to Business Administration to broad social and cultural issues. In doing so, they not only gain initial insights into the subject matter but also experience everyday student life as in a regular bachelor’s program, including lectures, exams, and project work. Since the Foundation course is part-time, students also have the opportunity to use their remaining time as they see fit: whether it’s for a part-time job, an internship, or simply to adjust to their new daily routine.

Academic success begins with a good decision. The Management Foundation course gives prospective students the opportunity to explore course content, reflect on their own strengths, and make an informed choice about their academic path. In this way, we create better conditions for motivation, perseverance, and successful completion of their degrees.

A special advantage

Achievements you’ve already earned won’t be lost. Modules you’ve successfully completed can later be recognized for credit toward a suitable bachelor’s degree program. At the same time, the Foundation course offers a safe environment to explore your options—without the pressure of having to commit right away.

With our Foundation course, we’re deliberately opening new doors: for young people who are still figuring out their path, as well as for those who want to chart a new course. We lower barriers without compromising on quality and create space for genuine exploration. In this way, we reach target groups that have often been left out until now. Our mission is clear: to provide guidance, discover potential, and actively shape the future.

Prof. Dr. phil. Małgorzata Maćkowiak, Vice President for Education and Sustainability

The project team also views the new range of degree programs as an important contribution to academic guidance: It can help reduce the number of poor decisions and dropouts, as students receive direct support here and, at the same time, gain confidence, motivation, and clarity regarding their future educational path.

A degree course begins not only with the choice of a subject, but also with the question: What actually suits me? We help you find an honest answer to this question.

Presentation at the University Open House

The Management Foundation course was also presented at this year’s University Open House by the subject-specific academic consulation, Dr. Stefan Donath. Prospective students had the opportunity to learn about the program right there on site, ask questions, and get an initial glimpse into the course content and structure.

The Open University Day demonstrated just how much interest there is in the Foundation course. Many young people are hesitant, have questions, and may not want to commit right away—they’d rather just get started. They’re looking for a suitable way to begin that takes their reservations—and sometimes their fears—seriously. I’m convinced that the Foundation course is exactly the right option for these students, allowing them to test the waters and giving them the time they need to get a feel for everyday college life.
