The Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) is expanding its opportunities for early-career researchers and is advertising a doctoral position for the first time, to begin on March 1, 2025. Subject to the availability of funding in the STEM fields ( science, computer science, nature sciences, and technology), a part-time position (24 hours/week; 0.6 FTE) is available as
Ph.D. candidate (m/f/d) in STEM —Reference Number: 47-2024 PromotionMINT—
fixed-term until February 28, 2028. An extension for an additional year is possible upon request.
The focus of the position is on conducting an academic research paper with the goal of earning a doctoral degree within the funding period.
Formal Requirements for an Application
- A recommendation and supervision by a professor at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences
- Acceptance as a doctoral candidate at a faculty of a university authorized to grant doctoral degrees, or at least a written statement of intent from the professor expected to serve as the supervisor; the professorship at HSZG must belong to one of the following faculties: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Natural and Environmental Sciences[1].
- Eligibility to pursue a doctorate, generally demonstrated by a doctoral degree.
Personal Requirements
- Academic quality, originality/innovativeness, and feasibility of the doctoral project,
- Existence and quality of academic work, as well as general and subject-specific research experience,
- democratic, sociopolitical, or civic engagement (particularly in the region), as well as
- the significance of the doctoral project for enhancing the profile of Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and the relevant department in the areas of research, knowledge transfer, and the third mission.
- Good written and spoken German and English.

Salary is based on pay grade 13 of the TV-L collective bargaining agreement, provided the candidate meets the personal qualifications. The proposal (at least 15 and no more than 20 pages, font size 12, 1.5 line spacing) should be structured as follows:
- Cover page (personal information, faculty or institute at HSZG where the doctoral studies are to take place, contact information, duration)
- Information on the advisors (contact information, statements regarding the advisory relationship and acceptance as a doctoral candidate)
- Description of the doctoral project (research objectives, state of the art, research design/methods, work plan and timeline)
- Applicant’s prior work/experience in the research field
- Alignment with the research and knowledge transfer priorities of the HSZG (FSP) and the host unit (faculty or institute)
- Information on democratic, sociopolitical, or civic engagement (past 5 years)
- Bibliography
- Attachments (if necessary, max. 20 additional pages)
