New "Nursing" Degree Programme Set to Launch!

Subject to ministerial approval, Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences will offer the new “B.Sc. in Nursing” degree programme at the Görlitz campus in the future. With its generalist focus, this degree programme is unique in Eastern Saxony.

“Generalist” means that the program combines the professions of general nursing, pediatric nursing, and geriatric nursing, and imparts the skills necessary to provide science-based, independent, comprehensive, and process-oriented care for people of all ages in acute and long-term inpatient and outpatient care settings. Modern nursing is a healthcare profession; this degree programme provides the theory-based foundation for professional practice with patients and thus also contributes to improving the quality of care, particularly in the Lusatia region.

This degree programme is open to all interested applicants who hold a university entrance qualification (Abitur or general higher education entrance qualification, subject-linked university entrance qualification, or a university of applied sciences entrance qualification) or, alternatively, have completed vocational training with professional experience and passed an aptitude test in accordance with the Saxon Higher Education Freedom Act (SächsHSFG).

The degree programme is based on the new Nursing Professions Act, which took effect on January 1, 2020. The program spans eight semesters and includes theoretical, training, and practical components that take place at the university, in the university’s own nursing simulation laboratories (SkillsLab and SimLab), as well as in the HSZG’s academic teaching facilities in the areas of hospitals, nursing homes, and outpatient care. Students complete the program with the degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc. Nursing), which includes, among other things, professional licensure as a registered nurse in accordance with the Nursing Professions Act.

This degree programme complies with EU standards, which is why the university degree receives full recognition throughout the entire European Union—unlike traditional nursing training at a vocational school.
