St. John's Church in Zittau provided the setting for the matriculation ceremony at which the German scholarships were awarded.
Recently, the new students were warmly welcomed as new members of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences at the matriculation ceremony . This year, the event took place in the newly restored St. Johannis church in Zittau.
The Rector warmly welcomed the new students and all those present. He pointed out that the university has excellent national and international networks. This not only opens up the path to an academic education for students, but also to a unique experience abroad or collaboration in research. He also commented on the election results on September 24.
He addressed fundamental convictions such as cosmopolitanism and tolerance towards other cultures. "Without a global and international orientation, our university will not be as powerful as it is now. Almost 20 percent of first-year students come from abroad. There are 33 nations represented here, such as Austria, Poland and the Czech Republic, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia Morocco, Syria and Kazakhstan." An environment that guarantees an international orientation is essential for a university to be able to survive in teaching, research and development.
The host, Pastor Ansgar Schmidt, also warmly welcomed the students and wished them all the best for their studies.
The Mayor of Zittau, Thomas Zenker, also addressed the new students in Zittau and Görlitz. He encouraged them to take advantage of the numerous cultural opportunities offered by the region and the entire border triangle in addition to their studies.
Oliver Kretschmar, representing the university's student council, welcomed the new students. He encouraged them to get involved in the student councils of their faculties or in the university's student council and to take advantage of the cultural and sporting opportunities offered by the university.
Dr. Stefan Jakschik, CEO of ULT AG Löbau, was this year's keynote speaker. In his speech, he gave the students three good wishes for the future:
"Watch your ideas fail magnificently and learn from them to build greater things on their ruins.
Be a citizen of this society, give your fellow human beings courage through your openness.
Become a European! Enjoy and use this fascinating European region."
