Aiming high with the students

On June 18, students and professors from the Faculty of Business Administration and Engineering Management took a look at the world from above at the Flight Day in Görlitz.

On Saturday, June 18, 2022, students and professors from the Faculty of Business Administration and Engineering Management met up for a day of flying in Görlitz.

In bright sunshine and blue skies, 10 students from the Faculty of Business Administration and Engineering Management made their way to the airfield in Görlitz with Prof. Jörg Kroschel, Prof. Matthias Fichna and Prof. Sebastian Zips. After viewing the airplanes, the students were able to admire the city and the surrounding area of Görlitz from the air on various sightseeing flights in different airplanes.

The eventful day ended with a barbecue together. The faculty would like to thank the participants and is looking forward to the next flight day in 2023.

Prof. Kroschel talks about the eventful day in an interview:

Prof. Kroschel, how long has the Flight Day been held at your faculty and who initiated it?

We organized the Flight Day for the first time this year, but there will certainly be a continuation next year. Prof. Fichna and I are two aviators at the faculty. Together we thought about how we could get our students interested in flying.

How has the offer been received by the students?

Ten students from the Business Administration and Housing and Real Estate Management courses took part in the very first flying day. I am particularly pleased that the offer was so well received by our foreign fellow students, with the ten students coming from six different countries.

Every student was in the air at least once, most of them even two or three times. I think I can say without exaggeration that everyone was pretty enthusiastic.

How does this flight day work?

We met at the Görlitz airfield at 10 a.m., and there was a short introduction on how to behave at the airfield. Afterwards, the students were able to watch the flight operations, and some of them were able to help launch gliders themselves. There was also the opportunity to get into a glider or motor plane and take to the air themselves. I heard that some students even took the controls themselves for a short time and flew the plane.

What do you find so fascinating about flying?

It's difficult to describe. A feeling of freedom of course, a completely different perspective, seeing the world from above, less hectic than road traffic...

When it comes to famous pilots, who is your flying role model?

The microlight I bought together with three friends is called Melli, named after Melli Beese, the first woman to have a pilot's license in Germany.

Flying and economics, how do they go together?

There are many similarities between piloting an airplane and managing a company. In both cases, you have a lot of responsibility. What's more, in both cases it's about achieving a goal you've set yourself, which can sometimes only be achieved in a roundabout way in bad weather or an unfavorable economy.
