Zittau Süd signal box equipped with signals

A great asset to the teaching of control and safety technology at HSZG.

The training signal box at Zittau Süd Station, used by the

Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science atundefined

, is currently undergoing further expansion. With this phase of the project now complete, the expansion has become clearly visible from a distance. Over the past few weeks, three signals have been reinstalled along the railroad track. These signals had not been necessary for rail operations over the past 20 years, as the rail operator had not scheduled any train crossings at Zittau Süd Station. However, for the “Control and safety technology” class—attended by

undefined” (KIA) electrical engineering

students from our partner DB Netz AG—the increasingly comprehensive and functional laboratory facility represents a significant enhancement.

The installation of the signals was preceded by a series of steps:

  • Transporting signal poles to the refurbishment workshop

  • Procurement of missing poles from the Cottbus Signal Works

  • Refurbishment of the individual components and the poles

  • Manufacturing and procuring defective and missing components

  • Manufacturing of two base plates to support the steel masts

  • Determination of signal locations

  • Installation of the ground bases

The work was primarily carried out by students from the LST department in the workshops at the Bertsdorf train station. In addition to university staff, they received technical support—for which we are very grateful—from employees of the railway operator (SOEG mbH) and the Zittauer Schmalspurbahnen e.V. association.

Although the installation of the signals marks an important milestone, the project is not yet complete. Next semester, the signals are to be connected to the training signal box. Since the signals are marked as “out of service” by a signal panel located upstream, this will not interfere with rail operations. Train traffic can proceed unimpeded regardless of the signal position. Furthermore, when students complete internships involving the setting of signals, there is no need to take the train schedule into account.
