The Zittau Süd train station signal box used by the
Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
KIA electrical engineering students of our partner DB Netz AG.
A series of work steps precede the installation of the signals:
Transportation of signal masts to the refurbishment workshop
Procurement of missing masts from the Cottbus signal factory
Reconditioning of the individual components and masts
Production and procurement of defective and missing components
Production of two ground bases for holding the steel masts
Determination of the signal locations
Installation of the ground bases
The work was mainly carried out by the students of the LST department in the workshops at Bertsdorf station. In addition to university staff, they were also thankfully supported by employees of the railroad operator (SOEG mbH) and the Zittauer Schmalspurbahnen e.V. interest group.
Although an important milestone has been reached with the installation of the signals, the project is not yet complete. The signals are to be connected to the signal box next semester. As the signals are marked as operationally invalid by means of an upstream signal board, this will not interfere with rail operations. Regardless of the signal position, train traffic can continue unhindered. In addition, the timetable does not have to be taken into account when setting the signals during student practicals.
