For stronger cooperation and more visibility
Prof. Sebastian Scholz was appointed to the board of the Leichtbau-Allianz Sachsen.
The Executive Board of the Saxony Lightweight Construction Alliance, consisting of Hubert Jäger (Dresden University of Technology, Chairman of the Executive Board), Lothar Kroll (Chemnitz University of Technology, Chairman of the Executive Board), Rudolf Kawalla (Technical University of Freiberg), Jens Ridzewski (IMA Material Research and Application Technology GmbH), and Robert Böhm (Leipzig University of Applied Sciences) has co-opted three additional Executive Board members. Sebastian Scholz (Fraunhofer Center for Plastics in Upper Lusatia), Michael Heinrich (West Saxon University of Applied Sciences Zwickau), and Holger Lieberwirth (Technical University of Freiberg) will immediately assume responsibility for strategic tasks within the association and enhance the Alliance’s ability to implement its goals. With this step, all regions of Saxony—from Chemnitz to Leipzig and from Zittau to Zwickau—are now represented on the board. This further strengthens the alliance’s scientific standing and reinforces Saxony’s visibility as a leading international region for lightweight construction research.

About the Lightweight Construction Alliance Saxony
The aim of the Leichtbau-Allianz Sachsen is to further network the experts based in Saxony who conduct research in the field of lightweight construction technologies. As the scientific point of contact for the Saxon economy, close cooperation takes place with companies in the relevant sectors as well as existing alliances and networks. The Lightweight Construction Alliance Saxony invites all scientific institutions, centers and clusters active in lightweight construction research to benefit from this Saxon network and to help shape Saxony's positioning in lightweight construction.
"Saxony is a leader in academic lightweight construction research in Germany and is very well positioned in this field with its numerous research institutions," Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sebastian Scholz is convinced.
”Now it is time to take on tasks such as coordinating potential project initiatives, strategies and public relations work at regular board meetings, jointly initiating joint projects in the field of lightweight construction and presenting the LAS to interested companies.
- Greater cooperation between the many different research institutions through open, cooperative scientific exchange and more frequent collaboration in research projects. Because only together can we make a difference.
- A stronger economic focus of the LAS and support for the establishment of lightweight construction companies and start-ups. Although Saxony has many research institutions in the field of lightweight construction, it still lags far behind other lightweight construction cluster regions (e.g. Hamburg, Augsburg) in terms of the number of industrial jobs in this area.
- A greater role for the HSZG and the Fraunhofer IWU within the LAS. The HSZG in particular has a lot to offer thanks to major projects such as LANDER³ (FH Impuls), Lightweight Construction and Energy Technology (STARK), Life and Technology (WIR) and our professors and numerous scientific employees in the field of lightweight construction and plastics technology. We must project these created values more to the outside world and involve the HSZG more in the joint projects of the LAS in the future. I will do my utmost to achieve this.
The Lightweight Construction Alliance Saxony was initiated in the summer of 2016 as an association of the three technical universities in Chemnitz, Dresden and Freiberg. The association of the same name was founded at the end of 2017 and now has over 60 institutional and personal members. The members of the association receive comprehensive support in contact mediation and transfer as well as in the representation of interests, public relations work, research and advice on public funding opportunities and numerous events.
