"Research and transfer our way!"
On September 4, 2022, the Saxon state government invited visitors to the "Open Government Quarter" for the 18th time. Saxony5 was there.
Last Sunday, it was that time again. The Saxon State Government opened its doors and invited the public to the “Open Government Quarter.” This year, the event—now in its 18th edition—was held under the theme “See and Be Seen.”
On September 4,Saxony5 and the five Saxon universities of applied sciences had the opportunity to present their extensive and fascinating work on the ground floor of the SMWK ministry building.
Ronald Wolf-Wagenführ, Diplom-Ingenieur, a research associate at the HSZG, presented several innovative products developed within the “Additive Manufacturing” Co-Creation Lab of the Saxony⁵ transfer consortium project.
These included:
- A 3D-printed scoliosis brace, which was developed in collaboration with the HSZG, the Fraunhofer IWU in Zittau, and the orthopedic company Orthopädische Werkstätten Görlitz – Sanitätshaus Rosenkranz GmbH.
- The O-Mask (respiratory protection mask), which was developed in a very short time—from concept to series production—using additive manufacturing. Here, too, the HSZG and Fraunhofer IWU collaborated and supported the companies HPF GmbH & Co. KG and Organ.Nico GmbH & Co. KG in bringing the project to fruition.
Last but not least, in addition to highlighting the university’s research focus on sustainable polymer technologies, he was able to introduce many visitors to the excellent educational opportunities at HSZG and spark enthusiasm among potential future students for the region and the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. “Most of all, though, the young people were fascinated by the glucose candies the HSZG brought along, ” the engineer with a Diplom sums up with a smile.
He sees the "Open Government Quarter" as a unique opportunity to introduce a broad audience to the type of research and transfer at the HSZG. With up to 5,000 visitors, the event proved to be an absolute magnet for visitors.

The exhibits were also well-received and even managed to convince Minister of Science Sebastian Gemkow of ‘our’ approach to research and knowledge transfer." ”This special form of research and transfer is wonderfully demonstrated by the exhibits brought along, explains the Diplom engineer. Each of these products was developed in close partnership between research and industry. The problems that existed beforehand could always be solved in a productive and transparent environment, so that initial successes could be recorded after a short time and provided additional motivation. "The special approach: living research and transfer together and taking into account the sustainable focus not only along the materials used, but also between the players involved, distinguishes the people in the region and thus also the HSZG," Ronald Wolf-Wagenführ is convinced.
