University organizes ice skating with international students
On 18.03.2022, after a break of more than two years, an excursion with international students finally took place again. The university raises STIBET funding for this every year via the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), which is used to finance such offers. BARMER also kindly contributed financially to the excursion.
As it was one of the last official winter days of the year, the students were invited to go ice skating (practice). Not far from Zittau, the ice rink in Jonsdorf offers the best conditions for this. The bus to Jonsdorf left punctually at 3 p.m. and the fun could begin. The group consisted of 39 students and 4 supervisors from the university's International Office and the preparatory college. It was a colorful mix of different countries, including Indonesia, Morocco, Myanmar and Vietnam. Some of the participants had already gained experience on the ice, but for others the ice was noticeably new territory. While some were pirouetting and speed skating on one side of the ice, others were practising with the metal frames provided. After some initial difficulties, however, everyone managed to stay on their feet for the most part and fortunately there were no major accidents.
After about 1.5 hours of fun, it was time to swap skates for running shoes again. For some, it could certainly have gone on a little longer, but the ice surface had become quite worn and needed to be prepared again. Happy and exhausted, the group made their way back to Zittau.
