The art of the decision

202 international and regional applications, five experts from the contemporary art scene, and one weekend to make the final decision—selecting the exhibiting artists for this year’s Zukunftsvisionen Festival (ZuVi). ZuVi has been held since 2007 in Görlitz on the German-Polish border and has been organized every year since then with great dedication, creativity, and courage by a volunteer team consisting mainly of students. The festival deliberately addresses the issue of vacant properties in the area to specifically draw attention to the potential of old, derelict buildings. It creates a platform for regional and international artists in the contemporary art scene.

Under the direction of the festival project’s art directors, five gallery owners, artists, and curators gathered on the Görlitz campus on March 10 to review and discuss the submitted artworks. From photographs to multimedia works, from installations to performance art —here, the jury reviewed exciting and diverse works that approached the exhibition theme “Seal of Quality—Ungut” in a wide variety of unique ways.

The jury selected the works for the exhibition through a two-step process. The chosen art was to be brimming with originality, provide inspiration, and be visually and conceptually compelling. For one week, it will fill a vacant building in Görlitz with life; an exhibition that fascinates its visitors, encourages them to pause, and allows them to enjoy art and events from a colorful program of workshops, concerts, and evening events for a few hours. With art at its heart and the curiosity of its visitors, the exhibition will become a hub for encounters and exchange for a week, all within a relaxed, unique atmosphere.
