German education system meets Genghis Khan

Görlitz university lecturer teaches and researches in Ulaan Baatar at the National University of Mongolia in May.

At the invitation of the National University of Mongolia and with the support of the German Research Foundation, Görlitz university lecturer Matthias Theodor Vogt will be teaching and researching in Ulaan Baatar from May 13 to 31, 2017.

The public lectures will deal with European and German history, questions of cultural policy and cultural theory as well as the German education system.

The reason for the trip is research into the Intangible Cultural Heritage - while Germany has just two entries on the UNESCO Intangible Heritage List, Mongolia is one of the leading countries in the world with seven entries, both in absolute terms and in terms of its population. A special feature is, for example, Khoomei, overtone singing, in which a single singer sings several voices at the same time, or Urtiin duu, the epic songs that are handed down in particular by the minorities.

In cooperation with the Goethe-Institut and the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, a series of expert meetings on the question of evaluation criteria for intangible cultural heritage are planned, as well as field research in Tsonjin boldog, the monument to Genghis Khan, in Elsen tasarhai on the edge of the Gobi and in the Central aimag.

Several Mongolian students have already successfully studied on the Görlitz course "Culture and Management" . Prof. Togooch Dorjdagva from the National University of Mongolia was a guest of Prof. Vogt and is expected to return to Görlitz in the coming academic year. Natural scientists at the Senckenberg Museum in Görlitz, one of the world's largest research institutes for soil zoology, have also had long-standing links with Mongolia.
