Comic book heroes, atomic bombs and a few volcanoes!

Learning—and lifelong learning at that. From childhood through old age. The Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is also committed to this motto.

Under the heading “Lifelong Learning,” Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences offers special programs each semester as part of its Kinder Academy and the Senior College at its Zittau and Görlitz campuses. Researchers from various disciplines introduce children aged 8 to 12 to the exciting world of science. Scientific lectures, discussion groups, seminars, and field trips are the focus of the Senior College, which is aimed at interested older residents of the district.

Senior College

During the 2018 summer semester, the opening ceremony for the 'Studienkolleg' (preparatory college) in Görlitz will take place on March 14, 2018. At that time, Prof. Dr. phil. Andreas Hoff, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Director of the research institute “Health, Aging, and Technology (GAT),” will report on the latest developments from the research project “Trust in Assistive Technologies for Inclusion in Old Age (VATI)” starting at 4:00 p.m. at the Hermann-Heitkamp-Building in Görlitz .

The start of the semester at the SeniorenKolleg in Zittau, meanwhile, will feature the event “What does the U.S. atomic bomb dropped on Japan in 1945 have to do with Upper Lusatia today?” Interested visitors can look forward to a lecture by Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Dieter Engelage on March 21, 2018, starting at 4:15 p.m. at the Peter-Dierich Building.

The Senior College at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences collaborates with the District Senior Citizens’ Council of the Görlitz district. Support is provided by the Friends of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences e. V. and the university’s “Studium Fundamentale” program.

Kinder Academy

In the first half of 2018, the Zittau Kinder Academy will kick off its 23rd semester on March 23, 2018, with the lecture “Volcanoes—A Window into the Earth’s Interior.” Starting at 3:00 p.m., interested children ages 8 to 12 can attend this explosive event at the Peter-Dierich Building.

The Görlitz Kinder Academy is already in its 27th semester. The next event will apparently have a Christmas theme when Prof. Dr. Hayk Mashuryan from the Faculty of Natural Sciencesand Environmental Sciences (MdM) explores the question “What does St. Nicholas’s building have to do with mathematics?” on March 16, 2018, starting at 4:00 p.m. at the Hermann-Heitkamp-Haus.
