The annual final round of the chemistry performance comparison for year 9 pupils at grammar schools in eastern Saxony took place on July 7 at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at our university. The six best teams of pupils who qualified for the final round in the first stage of the competition organized by the Saxon Education Agency, Bautzen regional office, competed for the best possible ranking in chemical calculations and experimental tasks in the laboratory.
This year, the chemistry department welcomed groups of students from the following institutions: Philipp-Melanchthon Gymnasium Bautzen (two teams), Ferdinand-Sauerbruch Gymnasium Großröhrsdorf, Foucault-Gymnasium Hoyerswerda and Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium Löbau (two teams). In the end, one of the two teams from Bautzen was just ahead of the students from Hoyerswerda and Großröhrsdorf. A special prize was awarded to two pupils from a science-oriented special class from Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium Löbau, who achieved the highest score outside of the evaluation. In the end, however, all the pupils could feel like winners, because the joy of scientific work and experimentation was always in the foreground.

After the award ceremony and presentation of prizes to all teams, a chemistry show lecture with numerous interesting experiments took place for the pupils and guests. The chemical background of the experiments was also explained to the audience. A big thank you goes - in addition to the participating students and teachers - to all colleagues from the chemistry department who contributed to the success of this exciting event. In addition to the Saxon Education Agency, Bautzen Regional Office and the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, the event was supported by the German Chemical Industry Association (VCI) and the German Chemical Society (GDCh).
