Exchange on the topic of digital teaching at the HSZG enters the next round
After a year full of exciting impulses for teaching and learning, we look back and forward at the same time.
In the 2022/2023 winter semester, the peer discussion forum “Digital Teaching Exchange” was launched at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences as part of the HSZG’s action plans adopted under the digitalization initiative led by the Vice President for Education and International Affairs,Prof. Dr.rer. pol. Sophia Keil, Ph.D. in Political Science, as part of the HSZG’s action plans adopted under the digitization initiative.
In collaboration with the Centre for eLearning (zfe) and the D2C2 digitization project, which is part of the Prorectorate for Education and International Affairs, a program has been established over the past two semesters in which HSZG faculty members from across all departments share their experiences with digital teaching to promote the exchange of best practices. Each of these regular online meetings centers on a 10-minute presentation by a faculty member or a research assistant involved in a project with a pedagogical focus. Participants have the opportunity to ask specific questions of the presenters, contribute their own ideas, receive inspiration for their own teaching, and engage in discussion with one another.
Key topics of previous meetings have included digital teaching formats ranging from blended learning to hybrid teaching (Dr. Steffi Heidig), the development of digital assignments in thermodynamics (Dr. Sebastian Herrmann), the design of digital exams (Marie-Theres Lewe, Tobias Weber), the didactic challenges in digitized laboratories (Julia Franke, Gesine Wegner), how microteaching formats can be meaningfully integrated into teaching (Daniel Winkler), and the benefits of the flipped classroom concept (Prof. Dr. Mandy Schulze). Referring to current trends in the digitization of education and teaching, the deputy director of the zfe, Dr. Steffi Heidig, provided insight into the topic: instructional videos as a lecture format. This was followed by presentations on the use of BigBlueButton in teaching (A. Sommer), digital skills in higher education (Doreen Klein, Susan Labude, Max Schlosser), AR glasses in the lab (Daniel Winkler), best practice examples of using digital tools in teaching (Sebastian Benad), and a discussion on the use of AI in teaching with input from the director of the zfe, Prof. Dr. Matthias Längrich. The exchange session went into the summer break with an interesting insight into the use of digital project management tools in teaching by Dr. Anna Prenzel from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. We would like to thank all participants for the exciting reports and valuable discussions! Special thanks also go to Deborah Halang (D2C2 project), who moderated the format and thus promoted cross-location exchange. It became clear how many great didactic approaches and possibilities of digitalization in teaching are already being implemented and how important the exchange between teachers is in order to benefit from the experiences of colleagues. At the request of the participants for a continuation of the exchange format and with a view to the future challenges of the digitalization of teaching, such as the promotion of digital skills among our students, we are going into the next round.
Starting in October, we’ll be launching new episodes and a variety of discussion sessions focused on digital teaching formats, methods, and tools; e-assessments; future skills; as well as challenges and tips for the digital transformation of teaching and learning. We look forward to lively discussions and are eager to hear the insights from our faculty.
