3D printing for children
Christmas afternoon at Traumpalast Mittelherwigsdorf on the subject of 3D printing and sustainability
On December 19, 2019, students from the Faculty of Business Administration and Engineering Management at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences organized an event on 3D printing at the Traumpalast in Mittelherwigsdorf . This took place as part of the “Business Software” module taught by Prof. Dr. Keil.
The students’ task was to independently plan and carry out this event.
The goal was to introduce interested elementary school-aged children to 3D technology and to spark their interest in both this technology and Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. The topic of sustainability was also to be discussed with the children.
The Traumpalast Mittelherwigsdorf served as the venue.
During the event, the children moved through various stations. Activities at these stations included building a 3D printer out of Legos, various games on the topic of sustainability, and—as a special treat for the children—trying out a 3D pen. Each child was able to use a 3D pen to draw or print a Christmas-themed design of their own choosing.
Throughout the event, a cube was printed on a 3D printer and later presented to the after-school program the children attend for group games.
At the end of the event, there was a short, fun quiz in which the children demonstrated that they had paid good attention throughout the afternoon and learned a lot. The event concluded with an informal coffee gathering, made possible by local businesses. The students would like to thank the companies “Bäckerei Schwerdtner,” “Linke Fruchtsäfte,” and “Oppacher Mineralquelle” for their support.
A project like this clearly demonstrates that the curriculum at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is very practice-oriented.
All participants were able to enhance their practical experience both during the project planning phase and during the event itself, and they had a lot of fun in the process.
Such innovative teaching methods allow students to view the course material from a different perspective, enhance teamwork skills, and provide other valuable experiences.
