3D printing for children

Christmas afternoon at Traumpalast Mittelherwigsdorf on the subject of 3D printing and sustainability

On December 19, 2019, the students of the Faculty of Economics and Industrial Engineering and Management of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences held an event on 3D printing at the Traumpalast Mittelherwigsdorf . This took place as part of the "Business Software" module with Prof. Dr. Keil.

The students' task was to plan and carry out this event independently.

The aim was to introduce interested children of primary school age to 3D technology and arouse their interest in this technology as well as their interest in the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. The topic of sustainability was also to be discussed with the children.

The event was held at the Traumpalast Mittelherwigsdorf.

At the event, the children went through various stations. These stations included building a 3D printer from Lego, various games on the topic of sustainability and, as a small highlight for the children, trying out a 3D pen. Each child was able to paint/print a Christmas motif of their choice using a 3D pen.

Throughout the event, a cube was printed in a 3D printer, which was given to the after-school care center where the children come from for communal games.

At the end of the event, there was a short playful quiz in which the children showed that they had paid attention and learned a lot during the afternoon. The whole event ended with an open coffee break, which was made possible by regional companies. In this regard, the students would like to thank the companies "Bäckerei Schwerdtner", "Linke Fruchtsäfte" and "Oppacher Mineralquelle".

A different way to study!

A project like this shows that studying at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is very practice-oriented.

All participants were able to strengthen their practical experience during the project planning as well as during the event itself and had a lot of fun in the process.

New teaching methods such as these make it possible to look at the course content from a different perspective, strengthen teamwork skills and gain new experiences.

A special thank you goes to the Traumpalast Mittelherwigsdorf as a partner of the project with the provision of the premises and for the helpful tips for working with the children, to the after-school care staff of the Mittelherwigsdorf elementary school and to ATN as a sponsor.

We would also like to thank Prof. Dr. Keil, Mr. Fallgatter, Ms. Matthieu, Mr. Mühlan and Mr. Winkler.
