The start of the new ARD Tagesthemen series #mittendrin shows life in the three-country region of Upper Lusatia.
Three countries in five minutes: That's possible in our Zittau border triangle. The new ARD Tagesthemen series #mittendrin made a stop in Upper Lusatia and explored the question of what role open borders play in people's everyday lives.
MDR reporter Friederike Rohman met with university employee Leonie Liemich and accompanied her to a meeting with a project partner in Liberec. Leonie Liemich has been a project coordinator in the Lusatia - Life and Technology Alliance since 2020. Together with her family, she made a conscious decision to live in Zittau - in the heart of Europe - and moved here from Prague to do so. The political scientist lives (and loves) Europe - both privately and professionally. In her eyes, Upper Lusatia is the perfect place for this.
Together with her team and the alliance partnerships, Liemich dedicates her professional life to the following questions: How can we make our region, Upper Lusatia, even more attractive? What technological and social innovations can support the local economy? How can skilled workers discover interesting development opportunities and at the same time provide families with an attractive living environment?
In order to solve these tasks for Upper Lusatia, companies, educational institutions, research institutes and associations have joined forces in the Lusatia - Life and Technology (L&T) alliance.Innovative instruments are being developed and new formats tested together. The fact that these projects in a three-country region are always conceived on a cross-border basis is not only a matter of course for Liemich.
The report will be broadcast in today's (25.06.2021) edition of ARD Tagesthemen from 21:45.
