Systemic work in child and youth welfare - educational support
Introductory Course, Starting March 30, 2017
This introductory course is the first of two parts of the training program to become a systemic consultant.
Target audience:
Professionals (psychologists, educators, social workers, social and Special Needs Education teachers) working in “youth welfare” institutions, youth welfare offices, counseling centers, and clinical settings. The course is limited to 20 participants.
Admission requirements:
A degree as a state-certified early childhood educator, state-certified social worker, or social pedagogue, or a degree in psychology (others upon request).
Professional field in which the implementation of systemic ideas and approaches is possible or can become possible.
Objectives of the continuing education program:
By teaching systemic thinking and systemic methods, the participants’ professional competence in the field of “educational assistance” is expanded. The implementation of systemic work in daily professional practice is supported through a process-oriented approach.
Course Content:
- Fundamentals of the systemic approach
- Systemic communication with children, adolescents, parents, and other stakeholders (Questioning techniques: e.g., contextual questions, resource-oriented/circular/hypothetical/paradoxical questions, questions about differences and exceptions, reframing, the “wonder question,” and the PELZ model scaling)
- Assistance planning discussions, goal setting (SMART)
- Appreciative Understanding of Family Systems
- Appreciative Exploration for Children: “Treasure Hunt” – Finding Resources
- Attitude: Appreciation, Solution- and Resource-Orientation, Impartiality
- Intervention Options
- Genogram, Photogram, Resource Wheel
- Relationship-Building
- Importance of Rituals
- Object-Based Work (Family Board, Sculpture, Resource Animals)
- Externalization
- Parent coaching, dealing with adolescent violence (based on Haim Omer and Arist v. Schlippe)
- Parent Training - “Empowering Parents”
- Working with Stories and Metaphors
- Inner Family
- Biographical Methods (e.g., Timeline) - Past, Present, and Future as Resources
- Systemic Programs (“I Can Do It”), Games (e.g., Thinking, Feeling, Acting Storytelling Game), and Computer Programs (Children’s Magician Bam)
- Reflection on Implementation with Children and Parents
Methods:
A diverse range of methods—instruction, demonstrations, role-playing, small-group work, video clips (including Arist v. Schlippe, Haim Omer, Insoo Kim Berg, Steve de Shazer), reflection, and, of course, practice, practice, practice!
Participants will be provided with comprehensive teaching materials as well as course and photo documentation. You are welcome to view documentation from completed courses upon request.

9 a.m. – 6 p.m. each day
150 sessions of 45 minutes each, plus 50 intervision sessions and 25 sessions of literature study

If necessary, individual block sessions may also take place at other conference centers in the Görlitz area.

Completion of the continuing education program:
Upon completion of all modules, the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences will issue the certificate “Systemic Work for Professionals in Child and Youth Welfare – Educational Assistance.” Completion of the basic course qualifies participants to enroll in the following advanced courses at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences:
Advanced Course Level I:
“Systemic Consultant” (*DGsP) – one-year program; Degree with a university and umbrella association certificate
Advanced Courses Level II:
“Systemic Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Family Therapy, and Counseling”; degree with umbrella association certificates possible
“Trauma Pedagogy—Trauma and Its Consequences: Practical Approaches for Education”; Degree with a university certificate:
“Systemic Supervision and Coaching” – degree with umbrella association certificatespossible:

€1,350.00 total price for all modules, the university certificate, and participant materials.

Funding:
Participants from Saxony may apply to the Sächsische Aufbaubank for a subsidy toward the total costs. The terms and conditions of the Saxon Continuing Education Voucher are available at www.sab.sachsen.de. Participants who, at the start of the basic course, already intend to continue their training as a systemic counselor or family therapist should inform the SAB of this and consult with the SAB before applying to determine whether these courses should be applied for as a package together with the basic course.
