Support in difficult times
The Psychosocial Counseling Center team introduces itself. It offers professional help with stress, exam anxiety and personal crises.
On December 9, 2024, Romy Reinicke and Nancy Ludwig, certified educators who oversee the Psychosocial Counseling Centers (PSB) of the Dresden 'Studentenwerk' (student union ) in Zittau and Görlitz, were guests at the career counseling office of the Vice President for Education and International Affairs at Zittau University of Applied Sciences/Görlitz (HSZG), Professor Sophia Keil. The goal of the meeting was to personally and thoroughly present the PSB’s comprehensive advisory services to the members of the advisory board and the student representatives invited to attend. This initiative underscores the importance of an accessible and professional support structure for HSZG students.
The psychosocial counseling service offered by the Dresden 'Studentenwerk' (student union) is an indispensable part of the support services we provide at the HSZG. It offers students facing challenging situations a professional point of contact and helps them cope with stress and find solutions.
The Vice President for Education and International Affairs, Prof. Keil, commented on this meeting: "It was very important to me to invite the representatives of the psychosocial counseling centers to my staff meeting to highlight the importance of these services and to ensure that all members of the university are informed about them and that student representatives can voice their wishes regarding the further development of these services. Supporting our students is very important to us—not only academically, but also in personal and difficult life situations.”
Overcoming Challenges in College
College is an exciting but also challenging phase of life. Especially at the beginning, there are many changes to navigate: moving out of the family home, building a new social circle, and settling into a new city as well as the academic world.
Many things happen for the first time during this phase. It is therefore normal that difficulties or crises can occur.
However, it is not only the start of a degree course that can be stressful, but also the further course or the end of a degree course. Typical challenges include work and concentration problems, exam nerves, writer's block, difficulties with graduation or conflicts in your personal environment.
Thoughts and feelings can be expressed and reorganized in a safe space. A conversation can help to find solutions and relief.
The PSB's Advisory Services
The Psychosocial Counseling Centers of the Dresden 'Studentenwerk' (student union) offer HSZG students professional support through in-person, one-on-one counseling sessions at their locations in Zittau and Görlitz.
In addition, students can schedule counseling sessions by phone or video call, as well as in person at the PSB in Dresden. Sessions can take the form of a one-time consultation or be part of a longer-term process. For the counseling relationship, it is recommended that the first appointment take place in person. Counseling in English is also available in Dresden.
Support That Makes a Difference
The HSZG is committed to supporting its students in all situations. The collaboration with the Psychosocial Counseling Centers of the Dresden 'Studentenwerk' is a key component in helping students overcome the challenges of their studies and promoting their mental health. This commitment reflects the goal of creating a positive and success-oriented academic environment.
A Heartfelt Thank You
The Vice President for Education and International Affairs, Professor Sophia Keil, extends her gratitude to the Executive Director of the Dresden 'Studentenwerk', Michael Rollberg; the Director of the Psychosocial Counseling Center, Dr. Sabine Stiehler; and the on-site counselors Romy Reinicke and Nancy Ludwig for their vital commitment.
