Diamond reunion

Former students celebrate 60 years of graduation at the university.

To mark the 60th anniversary of their graduation, a group of alumni from class ED126b of the former "Dr. Robert Mayer" engineering school in Zittau visited their alma mater, today's Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. They completed their studies between 1962 and 1965 in the field of "Electrical Power Systems". The time they spent together shaped the graduates and still connects them today.

The guests were welcomed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Klaus-Dieter Haim, who gave them a tour of the campus and showed them impressively how much the university and its infrastructure have developed since the 1960s. The group was particularly impressed by the modern high-voltage hall, which is a special reminder of their own education and at the same time an example of the technical progress that the university has made in recent decades.

A special highlight of the visit was the ceremonial presentation of the diamond exmatriculation certificates by the university's Rector, Prof. Alexander Kratzsch. With the presentation, the university not only honored the life and professional achievements of the graduates, but also their long-standing ties to their former educational institution.

In a moving retrospective, the group impressively described the framework conditions and content of their studies, which were highly structured and practice-oriented in the GDR era. In addition to the in-depth training, the alumni also recalled formative experiences outside the lecture hall, such as joint harvesting missions, internships in power plants, living together in a boarding school and social evenings in the city. Many of them went on to work in energy supply companies, in power plant construction or in higher education and took on positions of responsibility. At the end of their visit, the graduates handed over their class flag, which had accompanied them for almost 62 years as a symbol of unity and cohesion, to their alma mater for safekeeping. The Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences will now keep it as a symbol of the history lived and lasting appreciation.

The fact that they still meet regularly after six decades and maintain an active network speaks for the special cohesion of this year group. Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is proud to have such committed and connected graduates in its ranks and would like to thank them for their visit.

The university wishes the members of the ED126b class all the best for the future. We are hopeful that their ties with the town of Zittau and their former place of education will remain alive in the future.
