From September 27 to 28, 2018, an international conference on the topic “Current Paradigms in Research on Translation and Interpreting: Opportunities and Challenges” took place in the magnificent Baroque halls of the University of Wrocław (Faculty of Philology, Institute of German Studies).

The organizers—the University of Wrocław and the University of Warsaw—invited scholars from Ukraine, France, Spain, Austria, Germany, and Poland to discuss various aspects of translation. Research, theories, and forecasts on topics such as: specialized translation, the translation industry, the translator’s mind, translation as a means and goal of teaching, audiovisual translation, translator competence, and translation teaching were supplemented and verified by theorists and practitioners from the translation industry.

Prof. Dr. phil. Małgorzata Maćkowiak from the Economics and Languages degree programme led a panel discussion on artistic translation, which focused on the topics of the so-called “third culture” and onomastics in literature and film. Established as well as many young researchers from Europe presented old and newly defined paradigms in translation studies, debated their research findings, and compared tools, approaches, and perspectives in the field. It was a breath of fresh air that reached all the way to Görlitz!
