Recyclates as a growth driver

The "Business Meets Science" event at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences highlights innovative approaches to sustainable regional development.

On January 9, 2025, the event “Business Meets Science” took place at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. The focus was on the topic “Recycled Materials as Drivers of Growth—Potential for the Lausitz Economy.” Experts from business and academia gathered to discuss the opportunities the circular economy offers for the region.

Innovative approaches for a sustainable future

The event, moderated by Prof. Tobias Zschunke, focused on the potential of recycled materials from commercial waste and residual materials. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Niels Modler from TU Dresden opened up exciting perspectives on the future of the circular economy with his keynote speech on the CircEcon research factory. It became clear how companies can slow down cost increases through the use of recyclates and at the same time promote sustainable, local economic activity.

The presentations and the demonstrations and discussions that followed in the foyer that evening showed that the local circular economy offers enormous potential for the region: A strengthening of regional value creation, the development of innovative, sustainable products and the creation of competitive advantages by meeting strict environmental requirements.

Networking and knowledge exchange

At themed tables, the 126 guests from the business, trade, and academic sectors had the opportunity to engage directly with CircEcon experts. Over light refreshments, participants explored opportunities for collaboration between research institutions and businesses. Additional information booths provided insights into other regional initiatives, such as the Lausitz – Life & Technology Alliance, the Saxony5 consortium, the Circular Saxony innovation cluster, and the neo.NET e.V. association .

The “Business Meets Science” event once again proved to be an important platform for dialogue between the university and the regional business community. It provided key impetus for the sustainable development of the Lausitz region and underscored the importance of collaboration between research and business.

The event was jointly organized by the Dresden Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK Dresden), the General Entrepreneurs’ Association of Zittau and Surrounding Areas e.V., Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, and the Dresden Chamber of Crafts. A big thank you goes to all the co-organizers, guests, and active participants who collectively contributed to the success of this event.
