Electrical engineering colloquium

"EMC simply explained: basics and relevance" provides practical knowledge on electromagnetic compatibility

As part of the“Electrical Engineering Colloquium”series, a specialized event on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) was held on May 20, 2026. The event was led by Markus Thoss and William Maloumby from Würth Elektronik eiSos GmbH & Co. KG. Students, faculty, and interested guests gained a clear understanding of the fundamentals of EMC and its importance for the development of modern electronic systems.

The event began by addressing the question of what EMC actually entails. In addition to an introduction to the fundamental concepts, the historical development of EMC was also explored. It became clear that EMC is no longer merely a specialized topic in high-frequency technology but plays a central role in nearly all areas of modern electronics.

Another key focus was on legal requirements and the CE marking. Participants learned which directives and standards must be complied with for electronic products and why compliance with EMC requirements must be taken into account as early as the development phase.

Typical EMC transmitters and receivers were also explained in a clear and accessible manner. Building on this, the topics of emissions and immunity were addressed. The second part of the event focused on radiated and conducted disturbances. Using typical measurement setups, the session provided a practical demonstration of how electromagnetic interference is measured and evaluated. The demonstrations on the effects of shielding were particularly interesting. The experiments impressively illustrated just how significantly even small design changes can influence a system’s electromagnetic behavior.

The event thus offered participants a successful mix of theoretical fundamentals and practical demonstrations. The Electrical Engineering Colloquium once again demonstrated how current engineering topics can be conveyed in a way that is both understandable and relevant to real-world applications.

We would like to thank Mr. Franz Xaver Schleuder (Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences) for his technical support!
