This year, as part of DIES ACADEMICUS, students from the faculty and other interested individuals visited the Wobst Eco-Farm in Mittelherwigsdorf. There, they were able to learn about numerous renewable energy generation systems with a wide variety of operating principles across a broad range of power classes. The visit was rounded out with a lecture by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Uwe Schmidt (Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Zittau-Görlitz University of Applied Sciences) titled “Operation of an Electrical Power Grid with Decentralized Renewable Energy Feeders.” In particular, everyone was impressed by Dr. Wobst’s wind turbine, which is one of the first (commissioned in 1994) to have been installed in the state of Saxony. The simple and robust generator design, based on the Danish concept and featuring a pole-changing three-phase asynchronous machine, allows for machine operating lifetimes of several decades, even if the wind turbine’s optimal operating point cannot always be set. Visitors were also able to gain insight into the day-to-day challenges faced by an energy entrepreneur regarding energy procurement, distribution, tariff structures, and taxation.
