The Zittau Career Fair is held annually at three high schools in Zittau and is designed to help students in grades 7 through 10 explore their career options early on. In the familiar surroundings of their schools, the students gain a comprehensive insight into the training opportunities available to them in their hometown. The Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences was on site at Zittau’s Parkschule and introduced itself as an institution offering a wide range of future prospects for upcoming 10th-grade graduates.

Apprenticeship programs appear to be of particular interest to these high school students. The university also offers apprenticeship positions in the field of “Office Management.” The program lasts three years and, within the context of the university, teaches students how to handle the various processes involved in all areas of administration at a relatively large institution.

The _KIA+ program _{is aimed} directly at 10th-grade graduates. Participants are supported not only throughout the KIA (sandwich-style) degree course itself but also beforehand as they work toward earning their university of applied sciences entrance qualification, which is a prerequisite for the program. KIA stands for“Cooperative Study with Integrated Training” and not only helps graduates earn a degree from a university of applied sciences, but also, thanks to concurrent on-the-job training, makes them chamber-certified skilled workers and excellent candidates in the job market.

And, of course, studying at the university is generally open to anyone who goes on to earn the vocational baccalaureate after completing 10th grade. Prospective students can choose from a total of 34 degree programmes to find the right fit and begin their studies at one of Germany’s leading research-intensive universities of applied sciences.

Anyone who wasn’t sure on Saturday whether they could adjust to everyday university life took a closer look at the“High School Students’ University on Saturday” event. There, students in 9th grade and above have the opportunity to get a taste of what it’s like to be a college student. On five dates—all on Saturdays—lectures, experiments, and lab tours on various topics are offered. The next “High School at the University” event is on March 11, 2017, and will focus on “Technology Between Simulation and Reality.”

There was also a chance to play. Using the touchscreen, even students who are somewhat skeptical about physics and math could discover through the ExperiMINTe brain teasers that these subjects, when applied to real-world situations, are anything but boring.

Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is by no means just for high school graduates.
