Spinning Atomic Nuclei—Structural Elucidation of Organic Compounds Using NMR Spectroscopy

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is the most important analytical method for structural characterization in organic chemistry.

This powerful method is based on the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with the atomic nuclei of a molecule, thereby providing us with valuable information about how the individual atoms are bonded together. The hydrogen and carbon nuclei thus allow us to determine the basic framework of organic structures.

Since its inception in the 1950s, NMR spectroscopy has undergone continuous development. With modern equipment, it is now even possible to study the structures of biomolecules such as proteins. Imaging variants of NMR spectroscopy are used as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners in medical diagnostics.

You will learn about the design and operation of an NMR spectrometer and discover how to extract structural information from NMR spectra.

Our lecturer, Prof. Dr. Jan Mollitor, is a faculty member and researcher at HSZG in the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences, specializing in organic chemistry and organic spectroscopy.
