2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry: Molecules with Chiral Properties
Why is the mirror image of a molecule so important? The 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry honors the research of Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai. Prof. Dr. Jan Mollitor will explain the award-winning discoveries in an accessible and vivid manner on December 9, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences.

Molecules with Handedness—Why the Mirror Image Matters
Our left and right hands are mirror images of each other, but they cannot be superimposed exactly. Many molecules also possess this kind of “handedness.” Experts call this property chirality. But how can one of the two mirror images be specifically preserved during a chemical reaction?
The 2026 Nobel Prize in chemistry goes to Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai. They are being honored for their discoveries regarding nonlinear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.
Their research shows how an initial excess of one enantiomer can be amplified. In autocatalysis, a reaction product promotes its own continued formation. Such processes help us understand how one enantiomer can gain the upper hand. This is also significant for the production of active ingredients, since mirror-image molecules can have different effects in the body.
Science Explained in an Accessible Way
Prof. Dr. Jan Mollitor from Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences provides a clear explanation of this award-winning research and its significance for chemical syntheses and medical applications.
The lecture is part of the event series “Excellent Ideas. Simply Explained.” It is open to anyone interested, including university faculty and students as well as high school students. No prior knowledge is required. There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion following the lecture.
