A Strong Focus on Computer Science Education!
The ZukLOS team, CASUS, and DZA are launching a pilot project to promote computer science education for students.
On August 31, 2023, the second working meeting took place with representatives from the Center for Advanced Systems Understanding (CASUS), the German Center for Astrophysics (DZA), the Augustum-Annen-Gymnasium in Görlitz, the Christian-Weise-Gymnasium in Zittau, and the university. Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Sophia Keil, Vice President for Education and International Affairs, the working group is planning a pilot project to promote computer science education for students in lower secondary school.
Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences currently offers approximately 80 programs for students and schools. These programs aim to provide students starting in 8th grade with exciting insights into the world of science and research. At the same time, the programs offer students the opportunity to get to know the university and its degree programs.
As part of the pilot project, the plan is to incorporate the programs for students and further develop them based on need, so that they can subsequently be made available to schools as modules with specific connections to the content taught in computer science classes. At the same time, new programs focusing on selected research topics from the research institutions are being jointly designed and tested with pilot schools.
We look forward to collaborating with CASUS and DZA to enrich extracurricular STEM education in Upper Lusatia through education programs tailored to the needs and target groups. We’re not reinventing the wheel here; rather, we’re strategically pooling our expertise and closely involving schools in the region from the very beginning in the design, testing, and evaluation of these educational programs.
”The next working meeting will take place in Dresden in December 2023, where the DeltaX student laboratory at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf will first be explored and the content-related work will continue immediately afterwards.
