When physical meetings are no longer possible
Online conferences as an alternative to face-to-face events - Take the opportunity to attend the ZWB/Zfe organized live introduction and exchange of experiences on 01 April 2020.
Are you faced with the challenge of having to deliver a lecture entirely online? Preferably in a straightforward way right in your browser? At the suggestion of the Office of Education and the Center for eLearning, we searched for simple and secure alternatives to in-person instruction. Modern conferencing software not only offers an integrated work environment with a whiteboard, chat, and phone features, but also manages how participants can interact. It enables collaboration between instructors and students during meetings, with everyone participating via webcam and microphone.
The open-source web conferencing system BigBlueButton supports the following features (selection):
- PDF and Office documents can be shared via a presentation area (whiteboard),
- A polling tool enables interactive teaching,
- It supports webcams and audio,
- A chat area for participants to communicate with one another
The system has been tried and tested for several years, and web conferences with up to 50 participants at a time have been conducted without any issues.
You can get a glimpse of BigBlueButton on Wednesday, April 1, starting at 3:00 p.m. during the moderated online conference “... and suddenly my teaching has to go digital?!” During this session, instructors can share their experiences with our university’s teaching and learning support team and the Center for e-Learning.
