A lot of hiking makes you well-traveled
International Office organizes an excursion with the international students to Jonsdorf in April.
Hiking often makes you well-traveled—a view shared by the German writer Peter Sirius. With this in mind, the International Office at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences invites international students at irregular intervals to join various excursions in the areas surrounding the two university towns. Of course, hiking is always part of the itinerary. The first excursion of the 2023 summer semester took place in the Zittau Mountains amid glorious spring weather. A total of 32 students participated, some of whom even traveled all the way from Görlitz just for this event.
A group of students currently taking the DSH course led by Marina Matthey summarized their impressions in a short report:
“On April 21, Zittau/Görlitz University organized a trip to Jonsdorf in the Zittau Mountains. We met in the afternoon in front of the student canteen and then took the bus to Jonsdorf.
Two guides were waiting for us there. We started with a brief introduction, and then our hike began. First, we saw a doorframe made of sandstone. On the way to the Nonnenfelsen, we took a look at the Rabenstein and the Falkenstein. We also learned that there are nature reserves in the forest that are off-limits because eagle owls live there. We continued on to the Czech-German border. It was interesting to us that the border is completely open and can only be identified by boundary stones.
At the end of our hike, we climbed the Nonnenfelsen. That was the highlight of our hike. From there, we had a truly good view, and everyone took photos. We were impressed by the natural beauty of the Zittau Mountains; it’s a great place to relax. We are grateful for this guided tour.”

The next excursion will take us to Lake Berzdorf in May. More information will be sent by e-mail as usual. We look forward to welcoming many interested students again.
The excursions are organized as part of the STIBET I and DAAD Prize 2023 project funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The aim of the project and the measures carried out is, among other things, to bring the participating students into contact with the German population and to provide information about the university location and about Germany itself. The participants can of course also use and improve their existing German language skills.
