Since 2010, the city of Zittau and the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences have jointly organized the Day of the Environment on annually changing topics. In 2015, "Urban Gardening", the yield-oriented horticultural development and use of inner-city areas, is on the agenda. Students and citizens of the city and region are cordially invited to discuss this topic.
A green environment in cities means a better quality of life and living, promotes exercise and recreation, creates creative scope for encounters and is irreplaceable for experiencing nature and for climate protection. The gaps between buildings in Zittau's city center created by demolition can be transformed into a flourishing and useful community space through urban gardening. Where lawns and privet hedges grow in other cities, vegetables could be grown in Zittau's city center in the future. This will create additional places of social interaction for the city's inhabitants and increase the attractiveness of the city center.
This idea was incorporated into the urban action plan for Zittau's city center by 2020 (Zittau White Paper) as part of an extensive public participation process. An interest group led by the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences will devote itself to this topic in the coming months and carry out studies on a specific open space on Amalienstraße. This should show which possibilities for horticultural use are feasible. This year's Environment Day at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences will be the kick-off for the Zittau urban gardening project on Amalienstraße.
