Our HSZG at the municipal utilities

The university is participating in Stadtwerke Zittau's Family Day with a variety of research and teaching activities.

With “A Day for You,” Stadtwerke Zittau is hosting an exciting family day for young and old on May 28 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at its company grounds on Friedensstraße in Zittau. With a fresh new look, the event will feature plenty of surprises, interesting facts, and insights into the areas of electricity, gas, water, and district heating.

A wide variety of activities awaits visitors of all ages:

  • fascinating insights into how your municipal utility generates electricity and heat,
  • a journey into the world of renewable energy with Biomethan Zittau GmbH,
  • a tour of high-tech test facilities at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences in the power plant laboratory,
  • experiments and science shows with iQLANDIA from Liberec,
  • a colorful supporting program featuring music and performances,
  • fascinating facts about energy and water,
  • games and fun for the little ones,
  • a municipal utilities quiz for the whole family,
  • Food and drinks from local vendors

...and much more.

Our university will also be presenting a wide variety of interesting topics from our teaching and research activities.

First, the Energy Technology Cabinet (ETK) will open its doors. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to tour the ETK and its former Zittau teaching and research reactor. In addition, on the upper floor, you can watch a simulation of a so-called reactor startup. On the same floor, small experiments in renewable energy technology are demonstrated, in which, for example, a hydrogen-powered fuel cell propels a small vehicle (scale 1:20). In the basement, you’ll find a so-called cloud chamber that makes it possible to visualize alpha and beta radiation. In addition, the Faculty of Business Administration and Engineering Management will offer two simulations dealing with regional energy markets and the optimization of combined heat and power (CHP) plants, respectively.

In addition to the ETK, the Zittau Power Plant Laboratory (ZKWL) will also be participating. You will have the opportunity to tour state-of-the-art large-scale test facilities in the field of energy research and learn about current research projects from the scientists present at the Institute for Process Engineering, Process Automation, and Measurement Technology (IPM), the largest research institute at HSZG. In addition, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering will introduce themselves and conduct a wide variety of small experiments.

Of course, there will be an opportunity to learn about engineering degree programs in Zittau.

The HSZG’s participation in the SWZ Open House reflects the long-standing and good collaboration between the two institutions.

Why not just stop by?
