Over 2,300 first semester students move into halls of residence

At the start of the winter semester, 2,332 students in Dresden, Zittau, and Görlitz moved into the dormitories operated by the 'Studentenwerk' (student union) in Dresden. This represents approximately 20 percent of first-year students. 880 of these move-ins took place as early as September. 46 percent of the new residents are international students.

Single apartments were the most in-demand option among applicants. The 'Studentenwerk' (student union) also offers a wide variety of shared-living arrangements—ranging from small two-person shared apartments to large eight-person ones. In these setups, each student has a private room, and two or three roommates share a shower and toilet. The kitchen, which is usually quite spacious, serves as the common gathering place.A single room in one of the residence halls operated by the 'Studentenwerk' in Dresden costs an average of 210 €, while a single apartment costs approximately 265 €. The affordable rents, proximity to campus, and good public transportation connections are particular advantages of the residence halls.

A large number of applicants chose the WOMIKO housing concept—“Living with Fellow Students”—when submitting applications for residence hall housing. Under this system, faculties or Universities are assigned to specific residence halls. For first-semester students, this means they can get to know their fellow students faster and better and work together to succeed in their studies. In addition, students in higher semesters are available in the dorm as tutors to provide good support.

At the Fritz-Löffler-Straße 16 residence hall in Dresden, the 118 residents come from 22 countries. These students are in Dresden for just one semester. Thirteen tutors offer assistance with upcoming visits to government offices and answer questions about everyday student life. A welcome evening and other events make it easier to settle in and get to know one another.

For students who have not yet found housing, a few dormitory spots are still available for immediate move-in. The only requirement is to submit an online application.

Currently, there are a total of approximately 6,600 dormitory spots in 42 dormitories operated by the Dresden 'Studentenwerk' in Dresden, Tharandt, Zittau, and Görlitz. 35 percent of all spots are rented to international students. The renovation of the two dormitories on Gret-Palucca-Straße in Dresden is scheduled to be completed by 2019.
The Dresden Student Services International Guest House, located at Hochschulstraße 50 in Dresden, offers an additional 310 rooms. Students from German or international Universities can find short-term housing there.
