CZECH regulars' table in Görlitz

Speak a little Czech in a relaxed atmosphere, enjoy a good Czech beer, chat, and make new connections. For anyone interested, students in the Bachelor’s program in Economics and Languages (WSTb) launched a regular get-together in April of this year.

For the past year, the restaurant “Zum gebratenen Storch” in Görlitz—right next to the zoo—has finally offered the chance to be treated to Czech dishes and a solid selection of Czech beer by a Czech team. It’s exactly the right atmosphere for our CZECH get-together.

Of course, this is a good opportunity for future translators to put the Czech language skills they’ve acquired during their studies into practice. But all other students at the university, as well as any interested people from the region who speak some Czech, feel connected to the Czech language in any way, or are native speakers themselves, are also welcome to join the get-together. Your language proficiency level doesn’t matter at all, since we can always switch back to German at any time.

All Czech students at our university, as well as any Czechs currently in Görlitz, are also warmly invited. In particular, ERASMUS students from the Czech Republic who are studying at our university for just one semester are welcome to practice their German here as well. This creates a true win-win situation for both sides.

Nicole Bauer (WSTb14) brought the idea for such a get-together back from her work placement semester at the University of Ostrava in the Czech Republic. “In Ostrava, there’s long been a good old tradition of regular get-togethers—the German Stammtisch. Students, faculty, and anyone interested in the German language meet at regular intervals. They take the opportunity to speak German. Not only to improve their foreign language skills, but also to strike up conversations on a wide variety of topics in good company. As an Erasmus student and a native German speaker, I was, of course, always invited and was able to make many great connections,” noted Nicole Bauer.

The enthusiasm and joy of everyone involved were contagious, so she was determined to bring this tradition to Görlitz. With the full support of all students in the “Economics and Languages” degree programme, the way was clear for the Czech Stammtisch.

“The get-together has been a complete success in Görlitz as well. I was surprised at how quickly we started chatting with one another. Even after three evenings now, we’re not running out of topics—neither in Czech nor in German. In true get-together spirit, we’re now, of course, happy to enjoy the beer garden in front of the restaurant during the warm summer months,” reports Nicole Bauer.

Our CZECH Regulars’ Table takes place every first Wednesday of the month and doesn’t take a break for exam season or summer vacation.

That’s why we’re already meeting on July 4, 2018, for the next CZECH regulars’ get-together.
