Environment Day 2016 in Zittau

“Today’s Metabolism: Clothes Make the Man” was this year’s theme for “Environment Day” in Zittau, where various sectors of the textile and apparel industry were highlighted, risks and opportunities were identified, and challenges were discussed. To the delight of the organizers and all participants, the event was opened by the Vice President for Education and International Affairs at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Christa Maria Heidger, and the Mayor of Zittau, Mr. Thomas Zenker.

Many students, staff members, and residents of Zittau came to the Peter-Dierich-Haus on the Zittau university campus on Wednesday, November 9,2016 to the Peter-Dierich Building on the Zittau university campus and actively participated in the panel discussion and the activities set up specifically for this day in the foyer of the university building.

Among others, the company WESOM showcased its technical textiles and provided visitors with information about its projects and various products. The Zittau Weltladen was also on site, presenting an exhibition and products on the topic of FairFashion.

Of particular interest was the traveling exhibition organized by the SMUL (Saxon State Ministry for the Environment and Agriculture). It explored the areas of housing, mobility, nutrition, and consumption, and impressively demonstrated just how much space our personal lifestyles consume.

The event concluded with a screening of the film “The True Cost,” which examines the garment industry and highlights the gap between models on the red carpet and female workers in the Third World. An interesting and unsettling film that should be of interest to every consumer.
