University Open House Good Reception

On Saturday, June 10, 2017, it was that time again. Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences opened its doors to high school students, their parents, and anyone else interested.

Prospective students took advantage of the university’s offer and visited the Zittau campus to learn about the full range of programs available at both campuses, as well as study options and admission requirements.

“We’re very pleased that this year’s Open House was so good,”

says Dr. Stefan Kühne, Head (of divison) of Academic Administration.

“The organizers and staff welcomed approximately 250 interested visitors.”

In addition to numerous prospective students from the region, the university also welcomed visitors from the Dresden, Cottbus, and Leipzig areas who had made a special trip to Zittau. They had already learned about the university at fairs or online and now wanted to see the study conditions for themselves.

This year, Rector Friedrich Albrecht welcomed the guests with warm words.

“Choosing the right field of study is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in your life,” he said. He encouraged the young people to explore the university and to talk with students from a wide variety of degree programmes. “That’s where you’ll get first-hand information,” he said. “We, as a university, are also interested in retaining young, intelligent people at our campuses—both for the benefit of local businesses and as the next generation of scholars for the university itself,”

he said. He also recommended that the guests take full advantage of the extensive offerings in the event program.

Firsthand information was available at the KIA (Cooperative Study with Integrated Training) booth, where numerous interested high school students gathered. The KIA staff and KIA students from the university’s training workshop were happy to answer questions about this now very popular form of training. Next door, at the university’s apprenticeship training booth, visitors could gain insight into the practical training required to become an “Electronics Technician for Devices and Systems.”

Many visitors were impressed not only by the university’s modern facilities but also by the welcoming, family-like atmosphere they encountered. The short lectures, lab tours, and the STEM Trail were very well received. Prospective students also took full advantage of the opportunity to talk directly with current students and learn about everyday student life at the university.

The lecture by Dr. Ilona Bürgel, a psychologist with a Diplom, on the topic “Well-being as a Career Factor” was very well received by her audience. “Interesting, exciting, and captivating”—that was the unanimous opinion.
