On January 10, 2018, a new edition of the 1st Practice Day of the Social Work degree program took place at the Faculty of Social Sciences took place. The aim of the event was to support students before their practical phases and before entering professional practice, to optimize the search and application process and to strengthen important skills through various offers for internship and career preparation. The internship day opened with a presentation and discussion with Thomas Santa from the DBSH Saxony state association (Deutscher Berufsverband für Soziale Arbeit e.V.) on the topics of collective bargaining law, classification and collective bargaining/employment contracts in social work.
Afterwards, the students were able to talk to various representatives from the field and graduates of the course at an internship exchange, get to know fields of activity and work, network and find out about internship and career opportunities in the district of Görlitz. Various social work organizations, institutions and projects in the district of Görlitz, such as Tierra - Eine Welt e.V., CaTeeDrale e.V., BBZ Bautzen, Landratsamt Görlitz, second attempt e.V., Christlicher Hospizdienst Görlitz, Jugendring Oberlausitz, Mobile Jugenarbeit Niesky, Verein für Straffälligenhilfe, Tagesgruppe "Sprungbrett" der AWO Oberlausitz, Malteser Hilfsdienst and the Görlitz family office were involved.
At the same time, the participating students were able to take part in free job application coaching to prepare for application situations and find out about and try out the possibilities of "applying on your own behalf". There was also the opportunity to take part in a field of action exploration, in which, in addition to developing an overview of the various fields of social work practice, search and finding strategies for the practical phases were also discussed. Thanks to the support of AOK Sachsen and the Görlitz photographer Paul Glaser, it was also possible to have application photos taken free of charge.
Around 60 students from all years of social work as well as interested students from other fields of study took part in the Social Work Practice Day. The offer is a cooperation project between the Social Work Practice Office, the DBSH Saxony and the Social Sciences Student Council as well as the support projects Students Advise Students, University Social Work and the Careers Service of Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. We would like to thank all full-time and voluntary supporters and contributors and, above all, the students for their commitment to the planning and implementation of the Social Work Practice Day.
