Study trip to Almaty

Professional and intercultural exchange between Kazakh and German students and lecturers.

Seven students from the

“undefined”

program in “integrated management systems” spent an eventful week in September 2015 at the

undefinedGerman-Kazakh University

 (DKU) in Almaty. The focus of the study trip was an exchange with students and faculty from the local bachelor’s program in “energy and environmental engineering,” as well as with representatives from Kazakh and German companies, on the legal, technical, and economic aspects of environmental, energy, occupational safety, and quality management systems. Through lectures, seminars, simulation exercises, company visits, and discussions with experts, participants identified not only differences but also similarities between the two countries. Similar to German companies, quality management systems are well-established in Kazakh companies—while environmental, energy, and occupational safety management systems are less widespread.

 

The study trip to Almaty is another step in the cooperation between HSZG and DKU. Professors and staff from the Ecology and Environmental Protection Department have been actively involved in the development and implementation of the bachelor’s program “Energy and Environmental Engineering,” and, as module coordinators, they conduct classes / courses on environmental law and environmental management systems at DKU once a year, either on-site or virtually. Students in the DKU’s “Energy and Environmental Engineering” bachelor’s program were able to complete a two-week study visit at the HSZG in the summer of 2014 and their four-month mandatory internship at companies in Zittau in the spring of 2015. Four of these students began their master’s program in “integrated management” at HSZG in October.

In addition to the academic content, the trip was particularly enriched by a very open and warm intercultural collaboration between the German and Kazakh students and faculty. And so, even with all the work, there was still time for sightseeing, hikes in the Tien Shan Mountains, and dining at traditional local restaurants. We would like to express our sincere thanks for the financial support provided by the PROMOS program at HSZG and the Association for International and Interdisciplinary Management e.V. to make this trip possible as well as for the expert guidance provided during the trip by Prof. Dr. Bodo Lochmann, former rector of DKU.
