'Studentenwerk' Dresden Launches Fundraiser for Students in Need

There is a special fund for this purpose, which is financed by student tuition fees. Normally, this fund is sufficient for an entire year. Grants are awarded after a case-by-case review and consultation with social counselors regarding options for stabilizing the students’ personal situations in the long term.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused far more students than usual to face financial hardship, as they have either lost their part-time jobs entirely—which served as their primary source of income—or are unable to work for an indefinite period. Single parents, students with children, and international students have been particularly affected.

Although the 'Studentenwerk' (student union) also supports students from eight universities within its jurisdiction in other ways —e.g., by deferring dormitory rent or extending graduation loans—the emergency fund of 54 T€ has already been completely depleted due to the COVID-19 crisis.

That is why we are asking you, dear university staff members, for your help! Of course, companies and private individuals are also welcome to donate.

The Dresden Studentenwerk is a public-law institution operating in the social sector on a nonprofit basis. Your donations are tax-deductible in accordance with legal regulations. In accordance with the tax relief measures enacted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, your bank transfer receipt or bank statement serves as sufficient proof of your donation—regardless of the amount—for tax purposes.Should funds from the emergency fund not be used during the COVID-19 crisis, the money will continue to be distributed to students in financial emergencies in the future.
