Electricity you can touch!

The 9th edition of "Business meets Science" focused on the challenges of shaping the network of the future.

"You can never solve problems with the same way of thinking that created them."
Albert Einstein.

The 9th edition of the "Business meets Science" event format in Zittau was once again informative and exciting.

Electrical engineers are a very special target group in terms of companies' need for skilled workers in the Upper Lusatia energy region. This is why the organizers of "Business meets Science" chose the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science as the venue for the event. The wonderfully architecturally designed stairwell in the university's newly renovated Building I was literally overrun by the 140 or so interested visitors, such was the level of interest in this year's joint event organized by the employers' association, the university, the Chamber of Crafts and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce. However, everyone was able to find a seat in an informal and relaxed manner, confirming the new relaxed atmosphere at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences.

Ca. 140 interessierte Besucher lauschten den Vorträgen.

The main lecture of the evening was given by Thomas Hörtinger, Head of Technical Power Plant Management at LEAG in Cottbus, under the title: "Challenges facing energy suppliers in Lusatia from an energy and socio-political perspective - the interrelationship between conventional and renewable energy". Hörtinger made it clear that, in addition to the enormous need for flexibility in coal-fired power generation and ensuring grid stability, lignite-fired power plants enable flexible interaction with renewable power generation.

Representatives from the energy and electrical engineering departments at the university then reported on the current state of research into innovative technologies for storing energy, the transport capacities of electricity grids and the challenges of designing the grid of the future.

Vertreter der Fachbereiche Energie- und Elektrotechnik an der Hochschule berichteten über aktuelle Forschungsstände.

Afterwards, the new electrical engineering training laboratories were open to visitors under expert guidance. They were able to observe electricity flows with the naked eye - electricity you can touch, so to speak.

If you couldn't be there, you really missed out. But on January 10, 2019 at the latest, when "Business meets Science" takes place again, companies will once again be able to see the performance and innovative strength of Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences for themselves.
