More guests than ever before

Record attendance at the 2016 graduation ceremony - more than 450 guests celebrated the graduation of our graduates.

Record attendance at the 2016 graduation ceremony - more than 450 guests came together at the end of April to celebrate the successful graduation of our graduates.

A varied day program awaited the participants, who came from all corners of Germany. In Görlitz, the day began at 11:00 a.m. with a tour of the campus, which, as in previous years, was led by Sandro Hänseroth. The campus tour in Zittau started at 12:00, with Ms. Trillenberg, Prof. Dr. Wiegert and Prof. Haim welcoming the guests. For the parents, it was nice to get to know their children's former place of work; for our graduates, it was interesting to see the inside of teaching buildings that they had not yet got to know during their studies.

At 1:30 pm, the next highlight awaited the graduates: the graduation ceremony. Professor Christa Heidger, Vice-Rector for Education and International Affairs, Thomas Zenker, Lord Mayor of the district town of Zittau, and Professor Reinhardt Hassa, Chairman of the Board of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences Association, welcomed the attendees and wished each of the new alumni a commitment to the region and the university that went beyond their studies.

Dirk Wieltsch from FERCHAU Engineering GmbH presented the Ferchau sponsorship award to industrial engineering graduate Jens Maiwald for his outstanding achievements in his final thesis on the topic: "Development of a simulation model to optimize the use of CHP plants in combined operation".

Many proud faces could be seen when the graduates were personally bid farewell by their deans or professors of the respective faculty and the Vice-Rector for Education and International Affairs. The coffee mug with the university logo and stylized Zittau Mountains donated by the university's support association and a small flower were presented as a farewell gift.

After the ceremonial farewell to the graduates of the Faculties of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the 2015 Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences Teaching Award was presented for the first time to the teaching group consisting of Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Hans-Joachim Kretzschmar and Dr.-Ing. Ines Stöcker (posthumously).

This was followed by the farewell ceremony for graduates from the Faculties of Management and Cultural Sciences, Natural and Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences, Economics and Industrial Engineering. The latter faculty was once again able to award the Dr. Rashid A. Al Makhawi Prize 2016. It went to the graduate of the Housing and Real Estate Management course, Luisa Schmidt, for her outstanding achievements in her studies  and in her final thesis on the topic of "Dependencies of land value on the degree of structural use in multi-family house plots".

The event was accompanied by music from the "Mandau Quartett", who received enthusiastic applause for their performance. Afterwards, the 2016 graduate tree - a winter lime tree - was planted in the Zittau student park and wish balloons were released into the air.

At 6:30 pm, the festively decorated and beautifully illuminated canteen opened its doors and welcomed the no less festively dressed graduates and their families as well as university lecturers and guests of honor to the Graduates' Ball. The canteen team surprised the hungry guests with a fantastic buffet. Later, hips and dancing legs were swung to the live band "Jenix" and the party continued into the early hours of the morning to the sounds of the Star Club DJ team. At midnight, a special highlight awaited the guests in front of the canteen: a fire show with Dhyana Feuertanz, which had many enthusiastic spectators despite the low temperatures.

In addition to the contributors already mentioned in the text, we would like to take this opportunity to thank Ms. Kothe and the canteen team, the Dezibar, the assembly hall, the Zittauer Senfladen, our chancellor Karin Hollstein, Dr. Falk Maiwald and Ralf Schwarzbach from the university library, the janitors Mr. Beyer and Mr. Wiechert, our hard-working student assistants, the KIA trainees and the participating university staff and lecturers. We would also like to thank the Förderverein der Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz e.V. and the HSZG student council for their financial support.
