"Smart LST 23" comes to a successful end with summer camp in Zittau

A 3-day summer camp recently marked the successful conclusion of a several-month-long internship designed to help high school students explore their academic options.

In collaboration with the long-standing partner of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science — DB Netz AG —this type of student internship was conducted for the first time usinga “blended learning”approach.

Field trips—for example, to the new Dresden-Prague rail line in the Elbe Valley—alternated with knowledge-building and hands-on experience gained through webinars. This organizational approach made it possible to offer high school students from five federal states the opportunity to participate in the four-month internship while simultaneously attending their senior year of high school.

The summer camp served as both the highlight and the culmination of the student internship. The three-day program was largely designed and led by dual-track students in their upper semesters at DB Netz AG. Particular mention must be made of the dedication of Mr. Oliver Krause (class of 2020), who was always there for the students during the webinars, field trips, and the summer camp, and who was always willing to listen to their questions and concerns.

The decision to pursue a particular career path has major implications. That is why it is important to support this individual decision-making process over an extended period of time with an open mind and to create as many opportunities as possible for students to try things out and network with like-minded peers.

On behalf of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science' , it is particularly gratifying that seven summer camp participants will be enrolling in the dual degree programme in automation and mechatronics for the upcoming winter semester 23/24. Alongside their studies, they will complete vocational training as electronics technicians at DB Netz AG.
