Pupils get a taste of university life

On Saturday, November 11, 2017, the “Saturday College for High School Students” program for the 2017–18 academic year will begin at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. The Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences will kick off the series with the topic “Treasures of the Past—Lignite in Upper Lusatia.” High school students in grades 9 through 12 will have the opportunity to get a taste of college life and experience what it’s like to be a student through a student-oriented lecture and hands-on experiments.

Lignite, a fossil fuel, has significantly shaped the identity of our home region—both economically and in terms of the landscape. Lignite mining has provided jobs for thousands of people and secured the energy supply. Now the lignite reserves are slowly but surely running out—what happens next? Annett Franke, who holds a Diplom in chemistry, and Eric Schön, who holds a Diplom in engineering, will explore this and other questions related to lignite together with the participants.

The lecture begins at 10:00 a.m. in Lecture Hall 0.03 of Building Z IV on the Zittau Campus (Theodor-Körner-Allee 8, 02763 Zittau). Afterward, participants will have the opportunity to choose one of two in-depth activities. Through laboratory experiments and a simulation game, the instructors will provide practical insights into the topic of “lignite.” The event ends at 12:30 p.m.
