"BücherboXX" project enters final round

Now that the “WanderbücherboXX Europa” in Görlitz has moved from Berliner Straße to Wilhelmsplatz, the pilot phase of the project will soon come to an end. Until November 30, 2017, book lovers can still use the mini street library—which takes the form of a phone booth—to drop off books they no longer need for swapping and sharing, and to pick up interesting titles to read. After that, it will be returned to Berlin to the Institute for Education, Work, and Culture (INBAK). A permanent BücherboXX of its own for Görlitz is planned for next year with a new group of students.

The second opening of the BücherboXX on Wilhelmsplatz was a success for the students in the “Sustainable BücherboXX” project group. Once again, the book exchange was officially unveiled, accompanied by live music, a craft station for children, coffee, tea, and homemade cake, as well as sponsored beverages. Poetry slammer Tom Hohlfeld presented two of his works to the audience. Refugees from Arab countries were also in attendance. Three refugee children of elementary school age took the opportunity to showcase their German skills in public by reading aloud from books in the BücherboXX. The “City Kids” after-school program also honored the students with their presence, and the children enjoyed the wide selection of books tailored to their age group. As a highlight, soap bubble artists were also invited; they generated a lot of excitement with their giant soap bubbles and played an exotic percussion instrument, the Swiss “Hang.”

The project team would like to once again thank all participants and supporters of the event, including the City of Görlitz, the Thiele freight forwarding company from Markersdorf, the staff at “Schlemmer-Pilz,” the staff of the Technical Administration & Facility Services division at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, and all other dedicated volunteers.
