Plastic-free - I'm in
Our university is using the BUND Action Week, September 19–26, as an opportunity to promote plastic-free coffee enjoyment!
Together with our partner, Automatendienst Locke, our university is launching an initiative to make the coffee and snack vending machines in the university buildings more sustainable.
To kick off the campaign week organized by the Görlitz chapter of BUND, “Plastic-Free—I’m In,” “JOIN IN” stickers will be placed on the vending machines as a first step. Our goal is to raise awareness that coffee, hot chocolate, and other beverages can be dispensed without plastic cups. All we need to do is bring our own mug from the office or our travel mug from our backpack. These fit into the vending machine’s dispensing slot and are detected by a light barrier. We can see this very well from the “No Cup” message that appears on the display. We then select our desired hot beverage as usual, and it’s poured directly into the cup after inserting coins. It’s actually a wonderfully simple and efficient way to make our daily college life more sustainable and to help reduce the annual consumption of 2.8 billion single-use “coffee-to-go” cups—enough to circle the Earth seven times—according to the Federal Environment Agency.
