New boiler attendant at IPM

Mr. Steffen Härtelt has become the fourth employee of the Institute for Process Engineering, Process Automation, and Measurement Technology (IPM) to successfully complete the training program to become a boiler operator in September. With this qualification, he is now able to independently operate the THERESA test facility —which requires monitoring—at the Zittau Power Plant Laboratory. As part of his work in the IPM’s Measurement Technology/Process Automation division, he is currently working on research projects focused on the development and experimental qualification of thermal energy storage systems.

As part of the three-week training course, which was financially supported by the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, participants gained both theoretical and practical knowledge regarding the safe operation, maintenance, and servicing of steam boiler systems and their safety-related equipment. In addition, participants received comprehensive instruction on existing legal and regulatory requirements, such as the Product Safety Act, the Pressure Equipment Directive, and the Technical Rules for Operational Safety.

With this successful degree, the research group’s staffing and technical focus have been optimized to meet the growing demands of ongoing and upcoming projects: From now on, long-term experiments lasting several days can be safely conducted in the Zittau power plant laboratory.
