New University Council elected!
New Chairman gives a brief outlook on the future term of office.
A new University Council was elected. Prof. Dr. Welf-Guntram Drossel, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU in Chemnitz ( ), was appointed as the new first Chairman. He will continue his work as a member of the University Council and is looking forward to the future challenges as Chairman.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the trust placed in me, and, like the entire University Council, I look forward to working together with the new University Executive Board under the leadership of Rector Kratzsch.”
He emphasizes that the University Council sees itself as a strategic driving force for the university administration and aims to support the university in playing a central role in the region’s structural transformation.
The duties of the University Council are set forth in Section 86 of the Saxon Higher Education Freedom Act. For example, it issues recommendations on shaping the university’s profile and improving its achievement and competitiveness, and is responsible, among other things, for drafting a proposal for the election of the Rector, as well as for approving the university’s development plan, the draft budget, and the annual financial statements.
The members were appointed by the Senate and the State Ministry of Science and the Arts for a five-year term. The term of the current University Council runs from February 2020 to February 2025.
In the opinion of the new chair, it is above all the practice-oriented teaching and applied research in socially relevant fields of the future—such as the design of a sustainable, climate-neutral energy system, the digitalization of the economy, as well as in the Social Sciences and even nursing, that make extremely important contributions to the region’s development.
“An important current task is to optimally develop synergies between the university and the new non-university research institutions of the Fraunhofer Society, the DLR, and the Helmholtz Association in order to establish Zittau and Görlitz as nationally recognized science hubs with strong appeal.”
Professor Drossel believes the university is on the verge of another significant step forward, and he is personally committed to playing an active role in shaping it, “because the establishment of the Upper Lusatia Plastics Center by the Fraunhofer IWU nearly 10 years ago already provided an important impetus in this regard.”
