As part of the formal enrolment ceremony on October 2, 2018, new students were welcomed to Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences in accordance with tradition. The event took place at the Landskron KULTurBRAUEREI in Görlitz. Numerous guests accepted the Rector’s invitation, including members of parliament, representatives of public institutions and companies, representatives of foreign and domestic partner universities, high schools, and alumni, as well as other members of the university and, of course, the new students and their families.
Ms. Andrea Friederike Behr, Managing Director of Europastadt Görlitz/Zgorzelec GmbH for Economic Development, City Marketing, and Tourism, was invited to deliver this year’s keynote address. She recounted her journey that led her to Görlitz and provided information about the diverse opportunities the region offers for professional development. At the same time, she encouraged the new students to take advantage of the opportunity to study abroad for a semester and to get to know foreign cultures and people. She showed those in attendance a film highlighting the cultural opportunities the region has to offer.
On behalf of the mayor of Görlitz, Dr. Michael Wieler, Mayor for Culture, Construction and Urban Development, Public Order and Safety, speaking on behalf of the mayor of the district seat of Görlitz, Mr. Siegfried Deinege, addressed the new students and welcomed them to their university towns of Zittau and Görlitz. He encouraged them to undertake further high-profile student projects in their university towns and to get involved in cultural life.
Oliver Kretschmar, representing the university’s Student Council, welcomed the new students. He encouraged them to get involved in the student associations of their respective faculties or in the university’s Student Council and to take advantage of the university’s cultural and athletic offerings.
A special highlight was the presentation of certificates to the Germany Scholarship recipients and their sponsors by the Rector, Prof. Friedrich Albrecht. They are:
The Germany Scholarship supports young people on their individual educational and career paths while also enabling them to continue their already proven diverse social engagement. The scholarship, amounting to €300.00 per month, is funded half by the federal government and half by a sponsor.
