Sustainability to join in

The Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences plants trees for first-year students.

Last fall at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, it was once again time to get to work! The popular tree-planting campaign, which was launched in 2022 by Environmental Coordinator Ulrike Bobek in collaboration with the Zittau Forestry Department, entered its next round. The aim? To plant a tree for all new first-year students - a green promise for sustainable studies right from the start.

This year, the campaign took place in an area near the old Hotel Hochwaldblick, which had suffered badly from the bark beetle. Many of the Norway maples previously planted there had unfortunately not made it due to drought, as forestry supervisor Steffen Peisert explained. The gaps have now been replanted.

The terrain was quite steep and the sun didn't make it through the thick wall of fog on this gloomy November day, but that didn't dampen the spirits of everyone involved. Steffen Peisert and his team were firmly in charge of the planting campaign and ensured that everything ran smoothly.

As usual, students were able to register for the campaign in advance to plant the trees on behalf of all first-year students. For some, the campaign has almost become a tradition - and a welcome change from everyday university life.

The event was not only actively and financially supported by the Student Council, but also by the Rectorate: Matthias Duscha, Chancellor of Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, did not miss the opportunity to lend a hand personally.

The tree planting campaign is a wonderful opportunity to do something for the environment and at the same time strengthen the community at the university - we are already looking forward to the coming winter semester and the next freshman trees!
