With a network to the physics world championship
Young physicists from Löbau put their talent to the test. The HSZG provides support.
In February of this year, the ten good participants in the GYPT (German Young Physicists Tournament) were selected in Bad Honnef, North Rhine-Westphalia. A month later, during a workshop at the University of Ulm, the five-member national team was selected.
After Team C4LQL8T3D (pronounced “calculated”)—composed of Fabian Bartuschk (18), Paul Linke (18), and Christoph Seibt (17) from the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium in Löbau—took second place at the GYPT, Fabian and Paul were nominated for the workshop in Ulm based on their outstanding individual performances, and Paul Linke can now look forward to the International Young Physicists Tournament (IYPT) in Beijing.
The competition revolves around approximately 17 problems that must be solved. The results must then be presented as convincingly as possible to a jury and defended in a subsequent discussion. One of the problems deals with the so-called “bottle flip,” while another involves the burning of floating candles. In addition to theoretical explanations of these physical phenomena, experimental investigations are of the utmost importance. To support the project, the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences—specifically the Department of High-Voltage Engineering and Theoretical Electrical Engineering —provided, along with other scientific institutions, a high-speed camera with a frame rate of 20,000 frames per second, as well as a thermal imaging camera.
We wish Paul Linke good luck and every good success at the IYPT, which will take place from July 19 to 26, 2018, in Beijing, China.
