More than 20 years of active partnership

HSZG intensifies cooperation with North-West University (NWU) in South Africa

In early April 2025, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frank Worlitz from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at our university spent three weeks at North-West University (NWU) in Potchefstroom, South Africa. The focus of his visit was on strengthening and strategically advancing the long-standing collaboration between the two universities in the areas of research and teaching.

Two Decades of Successful Cooperation

The partnership between Prof. Frank Worlitz (HSZG) and Prof. George van Schoor (NWU) has been in place since 2004 and serves as a prime example of sustainable international collaboration. It began with joint research in the field of magnetic bearing technology, particularly the mathematical modeling and simulation of trap bearings. Over the years, numerous projects have been initiated, characterized by regular mutual visits, joint classes / courses, and an intensive exchange of students and researchers. As a result, numerous master’s and doctoral students from both universities have completed stays at the other institution and carried out their final dissertations as part of the collaboration. A former exchange student from South Africa is now a professor at NWU.

Research and Teaching at the Heart of the Visit

During his visit, Prof. Worlitz met with professors and laboratory engineers at NWU to exchange ideas on teaching experiences and discuss current research topics and future projects. A central topic was the further development of research in the field of fault detection and diagnosis based on energy modeling—an area of great importance for the development of efficient and reliable mechatronics systems.

Another focus was on exchanging ideas regarding teaching in the Bachelor’s and Master's degree programmes in mechatronics. Here, experiences regarding curricula, teaching methods, and examination formats were shared in order to further modernize education at both locations and open up international perspectives for students

Supporting the Next Generation of Researchers

An important goal of the collaboration is to promote international exchange among Master’s and Ph.D. students. In the past, students from NWU and HSZG have already been able to gain valuable international experience through joint projects and final dissertations. These programs are to be further expanded to give even more students the opportunity to participate in international research projects and broaden their skills. To prepare for this, several meetings were held with current master’s students.

Innovative Degree Programs for the Future

Based on discussions with colleagues in South Africa—and previously in China and India—Prof. Worlitz developed a proposal during his study visit for a new degree programme in “Automation and Robotics” as part of another international project, featuring specialized modules on AI applications. Plans also include specializations in building automation, management, and computer science. Furthermore, a concept was developed for the module “Introduction to AI Applications for Engineers” for students at HSZG. This module is intended to provide engineering students with fundamental knowledge and practical skills in working with artificial intelligence.

Outlook

The long-standing, trusting collaboration between Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and North-West University is a key driver of innovation and internationalization in research and teaching. The current initiatives and the intensive personal exchange during the visit lay the foundation for further joint projects and offer students and researchers at both universities excellent opportunities for development.

Both partners look forward to continuing and further expanding this successful collaboration.
